The calculation to work out exactly how much you will need is:

 

Length x Width x Height of the area x 2.4 = This will give you the amount you need in kilograms, or tonnes for those big jobs (2.4 is the required compaction rate).

For example, if you have a hole to fill that is  L 50cm (500mm) x W 50cm (500mm) x H 25cm (250mm) you will calculate:

0.50 x 0.50 x 0.25 x 2.4 = 0.15 which is 15kgs.
